The city of Nijmegen is the oldest city in the Netherlands full of history and culture. The history of Nijmegen comprises the roman era settlement, the palace of Emperor Karl the Great, and the hard-fought ‘bridge too far’ over the river Wall during World War II. The inner city is a vibrant place with plenty of gourmet restaurants and characteristic pubs. During the summer Nijmegen hosts the largest annual walking event of the world ‘de 4-daagse’ during which over 1 million tourists flocks to the city.
